授賞理由

オギュスタン・ベルク博士は、「風土としての地球」という概念をもとに「自然と人間との共生」について独自の研究と提言を行ってきたフランスの人文地理学者・哲学者である。従来の西洋的自然観に基づいた環境科学や環境倫理とは異なる、日本、中国、モンゴルなどのフィールドワークに裏打ちされた、東洋的自然観を基盤に据えたユニークな環境人間学を打ち立てた業績を評価した。

博士はフランスの国立社会科学高等研究院教授を長く務め、また日本にも合わせて12年ほど滞在して研究・教育に携わるなど、わが国の文化・歴史への理解にもたいへん造詣がふかい。哲学者、和辻哲郎の著作『風土』から大きな影響を受け、それをフランス語に翻訳するとともに、和辻の風土概念をさらに拡充、深化、発展させ、風景や景観をめぐる独自の思索を紡ぎ出すことによって、「風土学 (mesologie)」と名づけられる新たな学問領域を切り拓いた。さらに、その風土学の理論的成果を基盤として、自然と文化の二元論や環境倫理における人間中心主義を批判的に克服しつつ、自然にも主体性があるという「自然の主体性論」を提唱した。この非・人間中心主義に基づいた自然の主体性論は、一方的に自然環境保護を主張する従来の環境倫理に対し、人間の主体性と自然の主体性をともに認め、自然と人間の関係の再構築を目指すべきとし、環境思想に革新的視座を提供した。この思想は、風土論を環境決定論とする批判への大きな反論であると同時に、地球上の生命論、生命体科学、西洋主体の哲学・科学に衝撃を与えた。

ベルク博士は、物理的ないしは自然的・生態学的な次元に属する環境 (environment) と、物理的であると同時に感性的でもある風土 (Fudo, milieu)とは根本的に異なることを強調する。言いかえれば、「環境」は客体として科学的に研究することができるが、「風土」は人間の主観性をはらみ、主体と客体の＜あいだ＞に成立するものと位置づけられている。

つまり、ベルク博士の風土学は、物理的なものと感性的なものとの二者択一を前提とする西洋の環境科学や環境観とは一線を画している。それを貫いているのは、「現代の環境の総体的荒廃は、根本的に近代の主体がその風土性 (mediance) を否定したことに起因する」という近代批判の問題意識である。このような観点は日本の伝統的な「里山」や「里海」を支えてきた思想と実践とも共振するものであり、自然との一体化を目指す東洋的自然観と一脈通じるものと位置づけることができる。この点は、著書『日本の景観・西洋の景観』にも反映されている。

こうした風土学の理論に基づきながら、ベルク博士は「自然」と「主体」の概念を再検討しつつ、「自然も生きている限り、機械と違ってある種、ある程度の主体性をもたねばならない」という結論に達する。つまり、生命ある自然には、進むべき方向、趣 (sens) を決める主体性がおのずから備わっている、と位置づけている。

またベルク博士は2011年の東日本大震災に際しては、たびたび来日して被災地を訪れ、数々のシンポジウムに参加されるとともに、「殺風景（風景を殺す）」をキーワードにして被災地の復興計画に対しても有益な助言を行ってきた。具体的な課題における風土論の有用性を示すものといえる。

ベルク博士の環境人間学は、自然と人間の関係を新たな視角から捉え直そうとしたものであり、今後、人類の生存を方向づける重要な哲学的指針を提起したものと言える。すなわち、資源の有限性を強調する「宇宙船地球号」のイメ－ジから、資源、制約、リスク、アメニティ（快適さ）を不可欠の要素とする「風土としての地球」へと転換させるものと要約できる。博士の功績は、「自然と人間との共生」というコスモス国際賞が掲げる理念に新たな一頁を拓くものである。
